Shoal asked:

Lets face it, todays youth (our future) aren’t getting smarter, they are getting softer. Jobs are declining as prices are rising. The Baby Boomers had it made, will we be so fortunate? America is no longer a first world country. Would 2 years of mandatory military service hurt America or help it?

Yea, because everyone who is in the military gets automatically super-smart. Whatever!

If it meant the possibility of ending up in a body bag then welcome to the 60’s. In other ways it might be a good experience- how about two years on the southern border?

National service with training in demolition for destruction of major airports and cars to stop Global Warming could help plus Civic Currency made by citizens. Under stand why you despair though.

Hey, there’s the solution. Draft perfectly healthy 18 year old kids to go fight and die in pointless imperialistic wars sponsored by Fortune 500 corporations. That’ll get the nation back to the good ol days in no time.

Pardon me, but if you no longer think that America is a first world country, then that only tells me that you have not traveled the world yourself. I implore you to educate yourself before making such groundless accusations. I think it would be a good idea for you to join the armed forces. It will teach you a lot about yourself and your relationship to America.

2 years of mandatory service will kill America’s economy. It takes millions of money to train in the military. We would not brk even if the ppl left after 2 years.
4 years would be better.
I spent 4 years in the Marine Corps I can tell you the military doesn’t always make a person noble. The Marine Corps was right for me but it is not right for everyone.
So even though I would love to say that it’s a great idea I would never vote yes on it. We are not a militant country I would rather have ppl in the military because they want to be there not because they have to be there.

Thats a good question… China has a military of around 300million you know why? because pretty much all males from 18+ have to join. America only has like 100million so if we did do that it would surely help our country in military power. However im not sure that would help America financially it would cost even more on military but then again China has every male in service 18 or older and they are doing really well economically so its hard to say.

I dunno but ive been told…

Were screwed either way. We will be poorer than our parents for the first time since the fall of rome. (rome fell the same way, btw.) I dont think two years of accelerated gym class could hurt, but it would turn into a govt propaganda battleground and massive pork project. It would turn into a huge americorp and be a joke.

The army reserves and national guard are already useless. This would be a chinese fire drill on a unicycle in space attempted by two helen kellers covered in superglue.

If you will recall, over 50,000 of us Baby Boomers died for nothing in a little police action called Viet Nam. I agree 100% with Trevor. There is no way that I could just stand around and do nothing while young men or women are having their freedom taken away by being forced into military service. I forsee massive riots if this country reinstates the draft. It’s wrong any way you look at it. I don’t know where you get your ideas but I think your system of beliefs and values needs some serious revamping. Are you a former drill instructor or just an ultra conservative fanatic? Your question is totally inapropriate.

I’d go for national service with many options if it meant something to be an American citizen.

I’ll tell you straight out nowadays it’s much better to be an immigrant in America or someone who has moved to the US then gotten US citizenship. There are NO benefits to just being an American unless you are super rich. A foreigner in the US has equal rights as a citizen so why be a citizen. The US is screwed. I’m voting for Obama by the way. We need to make Americans important again. I was USMC but I can say that all people who do things for the country are valued Americans. We need change now in so many areas!
