I am stumped by the amount of homework my kids bring home. Especially on holidays and weekends. I don’t ever remember getting that much homework when I was a kid. My kids’ school has stairs so a book-bag on wheels would be a bit of a hassle, but I’m afraid we’re raising, yes, smart kids but also over-worked ones with bad backs.
Perhaps this is only in a few places. My kids are straight A and B students and the sign when you drive into our town says one of the top 100 schools in the United States. I think perhaps they are trying to keep on that list. My kids barely have time for extra- curricular activities. And yes, they are elementary students. And I am an involved mother who helps them with their homework. A lot of the parents in town have had the same complaints.

I agree with you. It seems like the kids aren’t able to just be kids anymore, due to all the extra homework. Not only that, but recess has been cut back on too. When do children get the time to use their imagination?

I disagree. I think kids today are learning less (with major focus going to English and Math) than we did and are a lot lazier. They don’t get any more homework, they just don’t focus to get it done as quickly as we did - we wanted to get done so we could go out to play.

My daughters are in the 4th and 5 grades and both have homework packets that are given to them on Monday and are due the following Monday - they are about 20-25 pages worth of homework, plus they have book reports, investigation projects and other reports due throughout the year. I think that parents don’t want to be as involved as our parents did, and don’t spend the time helping and working with their kids.

What I’ve witnessed, with my grand daughters being in school, is they get bored because the teachers are NOT challenging them enough.
Children, who you label ‘over-worked’, need this to develop good work ethics for the future.
Depending on the grade; most middle and high schools give each student a locker. The locker is a place to store what books (or materials) you don’t need for the next class. Using a locker would help a child NOT to have to drag a wheeled book-bag to each class with them, therefore, a child will NOT have a bad back if they use their locker properly.
If you child is still in elementary school - then most of them have ‘cubbies’ for each children and they store all of their stuff until they need them.
