learning toys for kids
Shannon B asked:

We’re adopting a 6 year old with developmental delays and I would like to invest in a few good toys that will help her catch up and make learning fun. I have a limited budget and must make sound choices up front.

Leapfrog makes great educational toys for all ages.

I would recommend (and it worked perfectly with both our children) to go for traditional non-electronic toys, they do have real value and kids just love them.

Toys like beads rollercoasters (which develop manipulation and dexterity) will never loose an interest of a child, they are not expensive and last a lifetime. Magnetic mazes are good as well for fine motor skills improvement and logical stimulation. Both types of toys are enclosed and can not be taken in a mouth or lost. (Big benefit, since you will not have any missing parts in the future).

To catch up with alphabet, try specially designed and approved for delayed children, cardboard blocks with imprinted letters and words.

I am not sure the level of your involvement in the process, but fun dominoes game or puzzle game, which can be played together can significantly help in many areas: like speech development, color and shapes recognition, logical thinking, basic math and much more. The are really affordable but worth a fortune.

Chunky wooden puzzles is a great choice too… She can practice assembling fun and colorful animal and at the same time practice colors and create her own story.

I can talk for hours… We have got all this info and have bought really good products from the site below. The customer service is amazing, if you are not sure, call them and they will help you to identify the best item for your needs.

Wish you all the best and good luck in a challenging but rewarding task.
