I totally agree. I think we know more now, so we tend to do things with kids that are going to help brain development earlier on. I see kids writing the alphabet way before I ever knew how!
I beg to differ. Kids are coming out of highschool with very little knowledge. Half of them don’t have proper math skills, and more than that wouldn’t even be able to place an unmarked country on a world map! They aren’t prepared for college when they enter, and struggle with virtually everything.
As for being smarter than former generations, I think that depends on your view of what smart is. They deffinately aren’t as smart as they should/could be though.
I think they are smarter. Not sure it can all be chalked up to TV though. There are some eduactional shows on now though that lots of kids like. My son loves Diego and seems to learn quite a bit from it.
I think it depends on what your judging them on being smarter in.
If it’s life skills then yes most definitely they are more educated in that.
If it’s spelling grammar, math, etc then NO I don’t think their more educated.
Their intelligence is focused more on technology than on thinking skills so I’ll have to say no. They have just shifted focus in the age of the computer.
actually they seem dumber these days
I don’t necessarily agree.
I think that there have been smart kids since the beginning of time.I think nowadays, a lot of people lack common sense which is pretty much essential to live.
I do however agree that TV can teach a lot.Every show has underlining morals whether it is reality television or an educational program.People just don’t take the time to understand.
I personally have learned more from TV than I have all 12 years of school.
Common sense is more important than academic sense ANY day.
No.
Kids are pressured to learn things earlier these days. That is, the average first grader probably knows more now than they used to. But it’s not as if the human race has gotten smarter! Everything evens out in the end. Learning to read before kindergarten is not necessarily being smarter, it’s just learning stuff earlier, and it doesn’t necessarily translate into being a more brilliant college student. I just read a statistic that boys’ (collective) performance in math has actually been dropping over time.
As for tv, it certainly can teach things. But anything that the tv teaches a loving adult could teach better one-on-one with a child.
yep we know WAY more than you think we do
i don’t think anybody ever even gets those *** and drug talks from their parents anymore since we learn about it from media mags and peers
No I do not think they are…
Little kids seem to be smarter and faster at learning things but that national Sat scores in just about every subject has gone down over the past several years.
Schools have changes focus on how they teach too..
I have 2 sisters in laws as teachers
they are not allowed to use red pen to correct mistakes ( red is too upsetting to the kids the school board says….teachers have to use lavender pens because it is a soothing colour…and never must a teacher mark a X on a paper)
They are not allowed to correct spelling or grammar ( it interrupts a child’s creativity the school board says)
They are not allowed to write anything negative in a report card.
I could go on….but you see what I am saying…schools are more focus on building a child’s self esteem than teaching them how to spell!
Yes Tv does have some awesome educational shows…but again I believe that is most beneficial in the younger years.
Some of the worlds greatest minds never owned a TV set tho…
I would have to say no… perhaps more educated and exposed to the world as a whole, but not smarter per se.
Do they know more about sex, crime and designer clothing then they used to? YES.
Can they read/comprehend better, have math skills, or have any creativity? NO.
TV teaches kids to have a short attention span, to expect others to entertain and think for you…the list goes on. Not that it is all bad, but it is certainly no substitute for parental training.
